TOXICITY
When handling dry pigments we always recommend using a dust mask and gloves.
Though the Superfine Dry Pigment range is generally non-toxic we do include a
range of lead based Chrome pigments in the yellow/orange range. These Chrome
pigments must not be used for decorative applications. Always use a mask and
gloves when handling these colours and avoid eating or smoking. Once the
pigment is contained in paint form it is difficult to ingest and represents a low
health risk within the norms of standard use.
SCENIC PAINT RECIPE
3 kilos of pigment + 5 litres of medium
Ratio 1:1 2/3
METHOD
First make a stiff paste with cold water and the dry pigment. If the pigment proves
difficult to wet add a small quantity of detergent or alcohol to the mixture. This
will help break down the surface tension. Then thin out to a working consistency
(similar to a thin cream) with the warm liquid size or glaze medium.
For high quality applications use Brodie & Middleton Water-Based Lacquer. This
is an acrylic emulsion with flame retardant properties that provides a flexible non-
yellowing paint film. Other possible mediums include shellac varnish, linseed oil,
cellulose varnish, acrylic co-polymer emulsion, casein, Polyvine acrylic varnishes,
and even wall-paper paste
